An underachiever is an individual who is unable to achieve their potential or does not do as well as expected. These children have poor academic performance and behavior problems in school and are usually labeled as “losers.”
Cognitive deficits and psychological problems are two major factors leading to underachievers in schools. For instance, children with neurodevelopmental disorders such as autism spectrum disorder (ASD) or attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) will have difficulties in learning. Neurodevelopmental disorders are innate, that is, the children were born with abnormal brain development.
Psychological problems also affect the learning of children. Youth has stress just like adults, the sources of their stress usually come from worrying about their schoolwork, problems with friends, and dealing with changing life events (e.g., moving to a new district). Mental health problem is another major factor causing poor performance in school.
The mission of the Pro-talent Association is to provide remedial intervention for improving the cognitive function and psychological well-being of children and youth so that they can perform up to their potential.
The EC Brain Project
The EC Brain Project: "Changing Brain, Improving Emotion and Cognition", aims to provide brain science-based training for enhancing emotion and cognition. This is a joint project launched by the Department of Psychology at the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) and the Pro-Talent Association Ltd.
The EC Brain Project is led by Prof. Agnes Chan together with her research and clinical team. Prof. Chan's research team has been studying the brain functions related to different brain disorders and exploring effective brain-based training for enhancing cognitive functions and emotion for about 30 years. Their research findings have been published in top-ranking journals, such as Nature, Archive of Neurology, Cancer. The EC Brain Project is a platform to transfer brain science research and knowledge to educational and clinical applications for improving cognition and emotion.
